Los Alamos an Old Western Town

Located in the Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country and approximately 12 minutes north of the popular wine town of Los Olivos, you will find the quaint and quirky town of Los Alamos, a funky Old West heritage town founded in 1876. It’s worth a visit. There are so many fun things to do in Los Alamos, from visiting wine-tasting rooms to staying at a wonderfully restored iconic midcentury motel.

Los Alamos is now home to a vibrant culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants, bars, and bakeries that showcase local ingredients and creativity. Visitors can also enjoy antique shopping, art galleries, and historical landmarks, such as the 1880 Union Hotel and the Depot Mall.

The town was founded in 1876 by John Bell, a rancher, who built a stagecoach stop and hotel on his land along the main road.

Atop a hill overlooking the town, you will find the Skyview Los Alamos, a midcentury roadside motel that has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation. The old timers and passersby used to nickname this motel, “The Bates Motel”, although nothing is haunting about it. However, its new owners kept the old myth running for the new restaurant called ‘Normans” after Norman Bates from Psycho. Los Alamos loves and enjoys the old myths. The hotel is an awesome getaway with a restaurant that provides great food and cocktails.

Even though the motel is on the outskirts of town, their free bike rentals make it easy to get around. Explore the art galleries, antique stores, and check out the local event schedules.

Whether you’re exploring its rich history, savoring local cuisine, or enjoying the scenic surroundings, Los Alamos invites you to experience its unique blend of past and present!
